Discussion Forum #2 EXAMPLE The example shows random examples throughout history. You may not include any of these examples in your Discussion Forum response.
Part A.
1. John Calvin (1509-1564)
2. Benjamin Franklin’s Academy opened (1751)
3. Infant Schools opened in New York and Philadelphia (1827)
4. Emergence of the Junior High School (1909)
5. Cultural Literacy: What Every American Needs to Know by E.D. Hirsch, this triggered the back to basics movement (1987)
Part B. John Calvin Emergence of Junior High Schools See Attached Venn Diagram
Part C. All five have been answered for you.
3 of the following five questions have been answered.
1) These events/leaders are still significant today because John Calvin’s influence shaped the American Education system. He was instrumental in changing the belief that only the elite should be educated. He stressed that it was important for all to be able to read the bible and to contribute to society. His understanding of the fact that education could positively impact not only the church but the economic welfare of the community as well. The emergence of Junior High programs is significant today because the majority of our country’s school districts support the separation of Junior High from the Elementary School. Overcrowding and a lack of space led to Junior High no longer being combined with the early elementary grades.
2) If I could change the outcome of one of my listed events I would change the grade separation of Junior High School from 6,7,8 to 7,8,9 because I see little difference in the maturity level between 5th and 6th graders but I see a vast difference between 9th and 10th. I think maturity level can be tied to developmental learning and the 10th grader supersedes the 9th grade (generally) in the area. Therefore students at the high school level would be more of an even playing field.
3.) If only one of these events/individuals could have taken place; I would chose John Calvin’s influence because I agree that all individuals have the right to be educated, not just those that have the financial backing.
4) If I could change the outcome of one of my chosen events I would choose John Calvin to become more forceful and encourage the common school principle to not only addressed the K-12 student but apply this same philosophy to higher education because the cost of higher education has sky rocketed.
5) What would you say is the most important result of each of your chosen events? The most important result of John Calvin’s influence in education is the mindset that all deserve to be educated and that education can better our society. The most important result of the emergence of the Junior High Schools is that schools can easily departmentalize at this age and students can learn from con
